New York City Gay/Lesbian BarsJuliusThe oldest gay bar in New York with the looks to prove it.
The SceneWhile most gay bars are younger than your average boy band, this one was featured in "The Boys in the Band." At first blush, the place seems as dated as William Friedkin's hysterical soap, but when the 1970 film opened, Julius had already weathered many storms. The locals range in age from chicken to dinosaur. This joint is old. And like a woman of a certain age, she's not without her charms. From the top of her wagon wheel chandeliers right down to the brass dachshunds holding the foot rails, Julius is steeped in legend. The DrawHistory aside, the appeal is largely in the burgers. The bill of fare posted on the wall looks like it's been there since day one with only the new prices taped over the old. Still, you'd be hard pressed to find another burger in town that stacks up to Julius' $4 marvel. 159 W 10th St |
